Khalifa Avenue

Engineering the Sheet metal over the Myth of Casting.

The conventional limit. Thickness without function.

The project for the 850 icons of Khalifa Avenue presented the industry with a crossroads. The standard response from global manufacturers was aluminium casting.

However, the foundry process dictates heavy thicknesses, often six times greater than necessary, driven by manufacturing constraints rather than the structural requirements of an aesthetic cladding.

Accepting casting would have meant unnecessarily weighing down the vision and compromising the precision of the profile.

The challenge of fabrication. Millimetre precision.

Bottega7 chose a radically more complex path: fabricated cladding.

We began with metal sheets, transforming them through an integrated process of precision stamping, 3D laser cutting, and expert welding. The hurdles were not structural, but technical.

Designing dies capable of managing such extreme geometries – both with and without blank holders – and creating welding jigs to ensure perfect alignment required superior engineering intelligence.

The initial industry consensus was that it simply could not be done within these tolerances.

A perspective shot from the road level looking toward a bright sunset. The sculptural lighting poles are silhouetted against a gradient sky of yellow and pale blue. The curve of the highway and the repetitive placement of the poles emphasize the scale and engineering of the street lighting project.

Sartorial efficiency.
A six-fold advantage.

By developing a sheet metal solution, we proved it was possible to achieve the architect’s aesthetic with a profile six times thinner than a casting.

This reduction in mass was not merely a technical exercise; it was the key to an unprecedented commercial advantage.

While the project initially specified aluminium – and our first mock-up reflected this – our mastery of the fabrication process allowed us to offer a strategic alternative.

The Stainless Steel intuition.
Value without added cost.

We proposed a transition from aluminium to stainless steel at the same price point.

While stainless steel is a more costly raw material, its superior weldability and speed of processing compared to aluminium offset the production costs.

The result for Doha was the highest possible level of corrosion resistance and longevity, without impacting the budget.

We transformed a technical impossibility into a strategic acceleration of value.

The textured, golden-toned pole transitions into three slender, curved arms, each holding an illuminated LED panel that casts a bright, starburst glow. In the distant background, a row of similar poles and decorative blue arch lights line the horizon.
